THC, found in cannabis, shown to be effective in the treatment of brain tumors

(NaturalNews) Over the last decade, a multitude of studies have been conducted, aimed at testing the effect of cannabis compounds on several types of health conditions, including cancer, multiple sclerosis, heart disease, nausea, and many more.

In 2000, scientists at the Complutense University of Madrid carried out an extensive experiment, testing the effects of THC on cancerous brain cells in laboratory rats. Their discoveries were nothing short of amazing, as THC had effectively managed to destroy all cancer cells, while leaving healthy cells unaffected. Research into the effects of THC on glioblastoma would have had the potential to revolutionize available cancer treatments, yet due to insufficient funding and poor public exposure, the science team was unable to further their research.

At the time, lead researcher Manuel Guzman explained that “cannabinoids are selective antitumor compounds, as they can kill tumor cells without affecting their non-transformed counterparts.” In contrast to this, chemotherapy, the prevalent anticancer treatment of today, consists of a combination of antineoplastic drugs that have devastating physical and psychological side-effects, which may include:

- depression of the immune system, which can expose the body to fatal infections

- chronic fatigue and anemia

- gastrointestinal distress

- hair loss

- infertility

- cognitive impairment

- teratogenicity (which means chemotherapy carries the risk of inducing genetic mutations that lead to malformations in fetuses, if the mother undergoes chemotherapy)

Dr. Guzman goes on to explain that THC has the exact opposite effect on the body, actively nurturing and even protecting healthy bodily cells from premature cell death. For the 2000 study, Guzman and his science team injected glioma cancer cells into the brains of 45 rats, to induce brain tumors. The rats were then divided into 3 groups: 15 rats were subjected to THC infusions for seven days; 15 were subjected to a synthetic cannabinoid infusion; and the remaining 15 were left untreated.

The rats that had received no treatment died in under 3 weeks. The tumors in 3 of the rats from the THC group vanished completely, while the other rats in this group showed significant improvement, living a lot longer than the rats that had received no treatment. The cannabinoid group had also shown major signs of improvement. Guzman explained that gliomas are among the most aggressive tumors that currently affect human beings, and because of their attachment to the brain or spine, they are extremely dangerous to operate on and are resilient to drugs and radiation.

Guzman believes that THC works by triggering the build-up of a chemical messenger known as ceramide, which in turn induces apoptosis (or programmed cell death) in mutated tumor cells. Subsequent research into the properties of THC has revealed that it is among the very few naturally occurring, harmless substances that are capable of inducing programmed cell death in cancerous cells. Other substances with this property include anandamide, other cannabinoids and tumor necrosis factors produced by the immune system in its attempt to fight cancer.

After months of effort to obtain funding for testing the medical effects of THC on human tissues, the Madrid science team was forced to abandon this project, although there is currently no effective treatment available for malignant brain tumors.

Cannabis oil is a highly efficient natural cancer cure

Cannabis oil is a highly efficient natural cancer cure.

(NaturalNews) Ever since the mid 70s, medical scientists have been well aware of the beneficial effects of cannabinoid compounds over cancerous cells. Thanks to modern science, over a dozen studies conducted during recent years have been able to partially reveal just how it works. Yet cannabis is still not endorsed by pharmaceutical companies as a cancer cure, and since it is not promoted through mainstream channels, very few people are aware of its benefits. Consequently, it is not sought after as an alternative to disfiguring chemotherapy and other harmful drugs.

Laboratory tests conducted in 2008 by a team of scientists formed as a joint research effort between Spain, France and Italy, and published in The Journal Of Clinical Investigation, showed that the active ingredient in marijuana, known as tetrahydrocannabinol or THC, can function as a cure for brain cancer by inducing human glioma cell death through stimulation of autophagy.

The study concluded that via the same biochemical process THC could terminate multiple types of cancers, affecting various cells in the body. Other studies have shown that cannabinoids may work by various mechanisms, including inhibiting cell growth, inducing cell death, and inhibiting tumor metastasis.

What is amazing is that while cannabinoids effectively target and kill cancerous cells, they do not affect healthy, normal cells and may actually protect them against cellular death. Moreover, cannabinoids are also researched for their pain-modulation and anti-inflammatory abilities as they bind to special receptors in the brain, much like opioid derivatives that are commonly prescribed today.

Further evidence to support the effects of cannabis extract on malignant cells comes from the real life experience of individuals who have successfully overcome cancer by using cannabis oil. Examples include a patient, who managed to completely cure his skin cancer by simply applying cannabis oil onto the affected areas of the skin, as well as another, who recovered from a severe head injury with the aid of hemp oil.

One of the cannabinoids that has displayed amazing medical properties is cannabidiol, or CBD – a non-psychoactive compound that is regarded by some as the medical discovery of the 21st century, and with good reason. Research indicates that CBD can relieve convulsions, reduce inflammation, lower anxiety and suppress nausea, while also inhibiting cancer development. In addition, CBD has exhibited neuroprotective properties, relieving symptoms of dystonia and proving just as effective as regular antipsychotics in the treatment of schizophrenia.

What stands out is that from the vast amount of research and data available, as well as the personal experiences of cancer survivors, is that no chemotherapy currently being used medically can match the non-toxic anti-carcinogenic and anti-tumorigenic effects of these natural plant compounds.

World entering era of permanent food crisis, with prices to double over next 20 years

Thursday, June 09, 2011 by: Neev M. Arnell

(NaturalNews) The average price of staple foods will more than double in the next 20 years, Oxfam warns. The world is entering an era of permanent food crisis, which is likely to be accompanied by political unrest, and the situation will lead to an unprecedented reversal in human development, it said. (http://www.guardian.co.uk/environme…)

International prices of staples such as maize could rise by as much as 180 percent by 2030, according to research published last week.

The Oxfam report comes following the UN warning in May that food prices are likely to hit new highs in the next few weeks, triggering riots and unrest in developing countries.

The number of hungry people globally is increasing rapidly as food production lags behind demand. This comes following decades of steady decline in global hunger rates.

“The high-price situation is not something that’s just going to vanish over one season,” Abdolreza Abbassian, a senior economist at the Rome-based United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization, said in an interview before the index was released. “The fundamentals are still what they are, a very tight situation for almost all commodities.”

The average global price of cereals jumped by 71 percent in April. Milk futures climbed by 0.8 percent in Chicago in May, while corn more than doubled in the past 12 months on speculation that more planting in the U.S., the world’s largest grower, will not be able to replenish global stocks. Also, wheat shot up by 72 percent due to crops ruined by flooding in Canada and Australia and reduced harvests due to drought in Russia and Europe. (http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-…)

The World Bank warned last June that 44 million people have now fallen below the poverty line due to rising food prices. And a combination of factors have set the stage for an increase in deep poverty, including depleting natural resources, a global scramble for land and water, the rush to turn food into biofuels, a growing global population, climate change and changing diets.

“We are sleepwalking towards an age of avoidable crisis,” Oxfam’s chief executive, Barbara Stocking, said. “One in seven people on the planet go hungry every day despite the fact that the world is capable of feeding everyone. The food system must be overhauled.”

Oxfam called on the Britain’s prime minister, David Cameron, and other leaders to agree to new rules governing food markets.

Oxfam wants greater regulation of commodities markets to contain volatility in prices and an urgent increase in global food reserves, including by ending the biofuels policies of western governments that divert food to fuel for cars. The agency also attacked excessive corporate concentration in the food sector, particularly in grain trading and in seed and agrochemicals.
